Clergy Appreciation Day

October 20, 2013  Fellowship Hall 12:00 Noon

October is Minister's Appreciation month so to show our appreciation and thanks to Rev. Kelly and Anne, the Worship and Membership departments will be hosting a Minister's Appreciation luncheon on Sunday, October 20, immediately following the church service.

This will be a soup, salad and dessert occasion.  The departments will furnish the soup, drinks and table service.  You are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share.

We will have a basket in the Parlor that morning if you would like to bring a card to be presented to them at the meal.

KELLY'S KORNER

Well, Anne and I had an almost perfect week to spend in Oklahoma with my family. Lots of time with family members, opportunities to run errands, the dogs got a couple of swims in my sister’s pool, and I was able to preach at First Christian Church in Claremore, OK. I even got a golf game in with my nephew at the first course I ever played. (If OU had beaten Texas, all would have been perfect!)

Preaching in Claremore brought back a lot of memories for me. I was a bit overwhelmed with these thoughts as I stepped into the pulpit. So much of my early religious life happened there. My family began attending church on a regular basis when I was in 5th grade. It was then that I was introduced to Sunday School. My parents helped create a new youth group. We went on trips and had retreats. I went to my first church camp. I was elected to district level leadership for youth. A friend and I taught a class for our mid-week program called Youth Club. We put on dramas and Youth Sundays. I was baptized. First Christian Church in Claremore, OK was the first training ground for my religious endeavors.

First in Claremore is not all that different than First in Macomb. In fact, the two towns are not all that different either. Both are on the smaller side. Both have universities. Trains run through both towns on more than regular schedules. The similarities of the churches—great, sincere, friendly, God-loving people who remember days when the church was fuller but continue to be faithful. And both have served, are serving and will continue to serve as the first training ground for people to come to know of God’s goodness and love and grace.

We have just completed a very successful capital campaign and next week we have a fall festival which concludes with Macomb’s Got Talent emceed by Bryce Dexter. A few weeks after that we’ll have our Thanksgiving dinner. Then, Advent and Christmas. And then, well, there will be something else.

Invite your neighbors and friends to church. Maybe we can be their first step on the journey to knowing God more fully. It’s what we do—historically…currently…forever!

Peace, Kelly
